How Often to Get Skin Cancer Screenings

One of the most common cancers in America today is that of skin cancer. It affects over a million Americans each year, with one out of five patients in the US area developing skin cancer at any point during their lifetime. With early detection and treatments, skin cancers are generally curable, but those who do not take a proactive approach to their skin’s health may find themselves getting diagnosed in the later stages. At Harris Dermatology, we stress the importance of routine skin cancer screenings for each and every individual to detect problems in the earliest stages.

What types of skin cancer can be found?

There are actually three typical types of skin cancer that can be diagnosed, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of cancer and requires treatment to keep it from spreading.

What is a skin cancer screening?

Skin cancer screenings are evaluations that are performed by trained and experienced dermatologists. At Harris Dermatology, we encourage patients to have these screenings annually. During the appointment, the doctor will evaluate the patient from head to toe, looking for signs of cancer. If any areas of concern are spotted during an appointment, our doctor will perform a biopsy. This is the removal of a small portion of a growth or mole that is then sent to an outside laboratory for further examination. If the sample shows skin cancer, patients will then work with their team at Harris Dermatology to determine the next course of action.

How is skin cancer removed?

There are various methods of removing or treating skin cancer, and they may include:

  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Cryosurgery
  • Prescription medicated creams
  • Mohs micrographic surgery
  • Curettage and desiccation
