Signs to see a dermatologist for dry and itchy winter skin

For many patients, the winter can be brutal for their skin. They may experience cracked, dry, and itching skin that becomes extremely bothersome for them. This typically happens due to the lack of humidity in the air during the winter months. Because this time of the year can be extremely difficult for many patients with dry skin, it is important for patients to moisturize their skin daily to keep it hydrated and avoid itching and redness. However, a dermatologist such as one at Harris Dermatology can help guide you to the right products and routines to ensure your skin stays healthy year-round!

How do I avoid dry, itchy winter skin?

There are several recommendations our team will make for patients who deal routinely with itching, red skin. Below are just a few of the suggestions we offer to our patients:

  • Avoid long, hot showers. While they may feel refreshing, they can dramatically aggravate the skin and dry it out. Instead, consider a lukewarm shower or bath, and keep it short. Don’t dry your skin as soon as you get out, and apply a moisturizer to lock in the moisture before dressing.
  • Avoid drier air. Dry air with no humidity is a big part of dry skin in the winter months. We strongly encourage patients who are stuck indoor with heated air to consider the use of a humidifier in the main areas of their home. This will prevent dryness elsewhere, such as the throat and nose.
  • Avoid exposure to cold air and wind. If visiting a cooler climate, be sure to protect the skin with hats, gloves, and scarves.

When is it more than just dry skin?

We encourage patients to visit a dermatologist if they are still having trouble maintaining moisturized skin. Itchy, red skin may also be symptoms of a more chronic or serious issue that needs prescription medications. Some common conditions that can cause redness, rashes, and itching that can be treated by a dermatologist include:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Hives
  • Contact dermatitis
