Moles are common skin growths that often appear as small brown spots. While most moles are completely harmless, you might choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons. It’s also important to have regular skin cancer checks by a board-certified dermatologist like those at Harris Dermatology. During your appointment, we’ll document or remove any suspicious moles.

Whatever your reasons for seeking out mole removal this year, our providers can give you the aesthetic look or peace of mind you want.

Is It Better to Remove Moles or Leave Them?

When it comes to mole removal, there’s rarely any downside beyond a tiny incision scar. Not all moles need to be removed, but you might benefit from this quick in-office procedure if any of the following apply:

  • You feel the mole detracts from your appearance: Facial moles can be difficult to cover with makeup. If you prefer an even skin tone, your moles can be removed for aesthetic reasons.
  • The mole is in an uncomfortable spot: From getting nicked by hair clippers to constantly rubbing on your shirt collar, raised moles can cause discomfort.
  • You notice ABCDE warning signs: The idea of cancerous moles can be frightening. Fortunately, many melanomas give us warning signs that we abbreviate as ABCDE (asymmetry, border, color, diameter, evolving).

While it’s important to monitor moles at home, we advise against panicking if you see changes. Without years of training, trying to figure out if it’s seborrheic keratosis vs. melanoma can cause unnecessary distress over harmless pigmentation. At Harris Dermatology, our skin cancer specialists will correctly diagnose your atypical moles and preemptively remove any precancerous growths.

What To Expect During Mole Removal

Mole removal is a quick in-office procedure performed with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain. One of our providers will choose surgical excision or shaving for removal. We might also take pictures of other moles for future checkups.

You could feel some stinging or burning around the site for a few days, but patients are generally able to return to their normal activities immediately following mole removal.
